Car Accident Involving a Kia on US Route 50 Resulting in Death
Incident Information
The Maryland State Police are looking into a fatal accident that happened on Wednesday morning, leading to the death of a young woman.
Troopers reported that officers arrived at the crash site near US 50 and North Main Street in Hebron on May 15th at around 7:30 a.m.
The investigation reveals that a Kia heading west on US 50 began drifting left for reasons that are still unclear. The vehicle entered a left turn lane and struck the back of a parked box truck. The Kia then crossed the median, entered the eastbound lanes, sideswiped another vehicle, and ultimately went off the road into a field.
Elizabeth Cockey, a 23-year-old resident of Salisbury and the driver of the Kia, was declared dead at the scene.
According to police, the drivers of the box truck and the sideswiped vehicle were unharmed.
Later that afternoon, Sandy Hill Elementary School in Cambridge informed families that Cockey, who was en route to the school at the time of the crash, was a Special Education teacher for kindergarten and first grade. The school explained that they had not yet informed the students, preferring to give parents and guardians the chance to share the news first. They also mentioned that additional counselors and social workers would be present at the school on Thursday and Friday to assist students.
The Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into this tragic incident.
